Tomorrow morning at 7:30 am Canada's 2nd largest Emergency room at Surrey Memorial Hospital will open it's doors for patients.
We moved here 8 1/2 years ago and about a month after we moved here I had my 1st experience at Surrey Memorial Hospital and unfotunately it was not a pleasant one. I had fallen and broken my pinky finger when I used my hand to break my fall. My husband took me to the hospital and we waited with our daughter until late into the night. By the ealy hours of the morning the Emergency room was full of patients and the nurse on duty must have been overworked or having a bad day as she snapped at my husband when he asked a question and sent him and my 8 years old little girl out of the waiting room. Finally after having to wait by myself I had a cast put on and was sent home. Thankfully my family hasn't needed to use the emergency since.
But I do think this new expansion is a major step in the right direction for all of us in the Fraser Valley. The new expansion for Surrey Memorial Hospital also has 1 of only 2 Pediatric Emergency rooms in all of British Columbia. Not only will children and parents have less wait times but this new Pediatric emergency room will keep children away from some of the more traumatic cases that come into an emergency room on a daily basis. By offering families a completely separate entrance to the Pediatric emergency room next to the main emergency.
This new expansion is geared to be more patient centred with more room, staff and up to date technology. All of which I think will help alleviate stressful and upsetting experiences as I had.
As of October 1st access to the new emergency will no longer be off of 96th avenue. There are 2 new accesses, 1 off of King George if you are heading north and then off of 94a avenue for those heading south on King George.
